The World's Fair (The World Exposition)
These fairs/exhibitions are held in large settings in varying parts of the world. The theme of the fairs derived from the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 and eventually found its way to England. The first official world fair was named The Great Exhibition in 1851 and it was the idea of Prince Albert.
There are three eras of fairs that occurred in history and they are the industrialization era (1851-1938), the Cultural Exchange (1939-1987), and the Nation Branding which is still present today.
In the industrial era these fairs and exhibitions revolved around trade and technological advancements. A lot of famous inventions were presented and branded at these exhibitions, such as the telephone in 1876 and the electric outlet in 1904.
During the Cultural Exchange eliminated the focus of technology and began to adopt cultural themes.
Today nations want the biggest and best fairs, each trying to compete with each other. A mix of the industrial side and cultural side are present.
The World Fairs are held every five years and the next one will be in Milan, Italy in 2015.
